Scalini – Bustling’ Scalini provides living proof that not all busy Italian restaurants need to have a celebrity chef or dabble in regional cuisine. Unreconstructed down-home food is peddled here, just like mama used to make back in the days when pasta with pesto was the last word in culinary innovation. All the old favourites make it on to the menu: seafood salad, tortellini Gorgonzola, calf’s liver with polenta, & veal escalopes stuffed with ham. Tables are closely set, & the place can get noisy, but a bottle from the lengthy wine list will aid conviviality. Service is as old fashioned as the food, in the best possible way. Scalini isn’t going to set the world on fire, but dining here is a warm, enjoyable experience.
Cecconi’s – One of London’s most popular Italian restaurants re-opens under the new ownership of the Soho House, Babington House and Electric Cinema group. The style is 1920’s Venice and while classic fresh Italian food remains the focus, Cecconi’s now boasts London’s only Cichetti bar (Italy’s version of tapas).
